About the Course
Swallowing is a complex physiological process involving multiple stages and mechanisms that ensure safe and efficient ingestion of food and liquids. Understanding the stages of swallowing, the mechanisms of airway protection, and the influences of different bodily systems on swallowing function is crucial for recognizing and addressing swallowing disorders, also known as dysphagia. This knowledge allows healthcare professionals to classify dysphagia accurately, utilize various diagnostic tests effectively, and implement appropriate treatments. Additionally, it is essential to screen for dysphagia effectively and determine when referral to Speech Pathology is necessary for comprehensive assessment and intervention.
Course Objectives
Recognize and describe the distinct stages of swallowing—oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal—and understand the physiological mechanisms of airway protection, including the roles of the epiglottis, vocal cords, and reflexes in preventing aspiration and choking.
Describe how various bodily systems, such as the nervous, muscular, and gastrointestinal systems, influence swallowing function and overall swallowing health, highlighting their contributions to normal and impaired swallowing processes.
Differentiate between types of swallowing dysfunction and dysphagia based on severity, etiology, and affected swallowing stages, and demonstrate awareness of various diagnostic tests, including videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), for evaluating and managing swallowing disorders.
Develop skills for conducting preliminary screenings for dysphagia, and understand the criteria for referring individuals to Speech Pathology for comprehensive assessment and specialized intervention, including the implementation of appropriate treatments such as behavioral therapies, dietary modifications, and medical or surgical options.
