About the Course

Welcome to "Babies, Breathing, and Bottles," a course designed to enhance your understanding of the critical aspects of infant feeding and respiratory health. This course will guide you through essential topics, including identifying babies at risk for feeding and breathing difficulties, understanding the normal stages of sucking and swallowing, and recognizing common medical conditions that can impact these functions. We will delve into the effects of medical interventions, such as tracheostomies, on feeding and swallowing, and explore various feeding therapies and compensatory strategies to support infants with these challenges. Additionally, the course will address the long-term effects of feeding problems, the importance of identifying communication and hearing issues, and the key considerations for when to refer infants to Speech Pathology. By the end of this course, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to provide comprehensive care for infants experiencing feeding issues.

Course Objectives

Identify At-Risk Infants: Participants will develop the skills to recognize and assess risk factors and conditions that contribute to feeding and respiratory challenges in infants, enabling targeted interventions for high-risk populations.

Understand Normal Feeding Behaviors: Participants will learn to delineate the stages and characteristics of normal sucking and swallowing, equipping them to identify deviations from typical patterns that may indicate underlying health issues.

Implement Feeding Therapies: Participants will gain practical knowledge of various feeding therapies and compensatory strategies, enabling them to effectively manage and support infants with feeding and swallowing difficulties.
