About the Course
Join our dedicated effort to elevate Wilderness Medicine through our Continuing Medical Education (CME) program. Wilderness medicine is not a separate specialty of medicine in the same sense of saying nephrology, cardiology or emergency medicine, but it is rather a field of interest where medicine is provided in wilderness settings, which implies certain challenges. Two important challenges are 1. being remote 2. having potential threats to survival Being remote means remote from any standard healthcare facility and hence having limited or no resources at all. The wilderness may impose threats to the “survival needs” which are water, food, fire and shelter plus communication. Nowadays you can also say part of survival needs are Wi-Fi and power bank.
Course Objectives
This course will help you grasp the unique aspects of wilderness medicine, including the inherent challenges of being remote and the survival threats posed by environmental conditions. You will learn to navigate these challenges by understanding the basic principles and adapting your medical knowledge to diverse wilderness scenarios.
You will gain insights into how to effectively manage medical situations where resources are scarce. Additionally, you will explore the survival needs in wilderness settings, including essential elements like water, food, fire, shelter. By addressing these aspects, you will be better prepared to handle emergencies where traditional support systems are unavailable.
You will learn how to handle musculoskeletal injuries, field wound care, foot injuries, and medical emergencies specific to remote environments. Emphasis will be placed on field management techniques that are crucial when immediate evacuation or advanced medical help is not an option. By focusing on these areas, you will be equipped to deliver effective care under challenging conditions and make informed decisions to ensure patient safety.
You will learn about essential items to include in your medical kit for wilderness expeditions and how to use them effectively. By focusing on practical aspects such as assembling a well-equipped medical kit and understanding its application, you will be prepared to address a wide range of scenarios you might encounter in the wilderness. This preparation will enable you to confidently manage medical issues and ensure better outcomes for those in your care.
